If you feel you have to get married quickly it can be really stressful getting everything in order for the big day. While shotgun weddings can take place for any number of reasons, you still want the wedding day to be special event if you’re planning a bigger wedding for later.

First thing to do is get a marriage license, and if you feel the need to get married fast remember the following information:

  • In Texas you will need one valid form of ID such a driver’s license, certified copy of your birth certificate, U.S. passport, Military ID, and your Social Security number.
  •  Neither one of you have to be a resident of Texas.
  • $70.00 cash, so don’t leave home without it!  The fees may vary from Texas county to county, but blood tests or medical examinations are not required in Texas.
  • If you or your beloved has been divorced within the previous 30-days, you must wait.  Texas requires that you show a certified copy of your divorce decree stating the 30-day waiting period is over.
  • The 72 hours (3-days) waiting period in Texas can be waived for active duty military personnel.
  • In Texas, couples are encouraged to attend a premarital education course that is at least 8-hours duration. It must be finished during the year preceding applying for a marriage license.  Contact Twogether in Texas for a roster of approved providers.  Rev. Cindy Clark-Heald is a registered provider.
  • Effective September 2008, the license fee will be waived if a couple takes the 8-hour premarital preparation course that covers important marital skills and issues such as conflict management and communication.

Next, schedule an appointment to get married by calling Rev. Cindy at 903-257-9009 as soon as your are able, then get your license OR the reverse is fine.

Then, purchase rings or use what is available.  You can always purchase other rings at another time.

Oh no, you’d better decide what you’re going to wear.  If you want to go formal he can always rent a tux and a nice dress can be bought from a major department store or bridal shop right off the rack that should suffice nicely for a shotgun wedding.

OR…Come as you are for a simple yet meaningful ceremony.

Finally, exchange vows with Rev. Cindy as your officiant, and, your shotgun wedding will be complete.   I’ll sign the marriage license to for the county’s records, then mail it immediately to the county clerk.

NOTE:  Did you know that what makes a marriage legal is the ceremony between us and when you say “I do”?  It is not the marriage license filed with the county clerk’s office.   This is important information so I though I’d share it.

TOTAL COST FOR YOUR SHOTGUN WEDDING is $77!

ELOPEMENT:

Is eloping for you? So many times in the wedding process, a frazzled bride will exclaim “We should just elope!” But few actually go through with it. Given the high cost of a wedding, and the prominence of celebrities eloping, this might be an option worth considering.

Before you decide to elope, you should carefully consider the pros and cons.

Reasons to Elope

Most couples who elope say that they want to save money.  The cost of running away for an intimate wedding and honeymoon typically costs tens of thousands dollars less than a traditional wedding. They also say that they don’t want the hassle of months of wedding planning.  They may also be avoiding family arguments, especially if one partner’s parents disapprove of their choice of spouse, or if a divorced set of parents can’t stand to be in the same room together. There’s something old-fashioned and romantic about the idea of running off.  And of course, the stereotypical Las Vegas bride is looking for spontaneity and a fun thrill.

Reasons Not to Elope

You’ll be missing out on celebrating with dear friends and family and some may be miffed that you didn’t include them. Mothers of the bride especially tend to have hurt feelings when they find out that their daughters didn’t invite them to their wedding.  If your parents already don’t approve of your fiance, this might be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, and your new husband may never have a good relationship with the family.  You’ll also be missing out on the chance to fulfill your wedding dreams.  Some report that after eloping, they always think about the wedding they never had.  You might also miss the opportunity to reconnect with friends and loved ones who live far away, but would come for a wedding.  And of course there are the pictures and memories you’ll miss– instead of looking back on pictures of yourself in a beautiful setting surrounded by loved ones, you might have only a few pics of yourself in an impersonal ceremony.

If you and your fiance decide that eloping is the right option for you, consider these variations that might avoid some of the pitfalls of eloping:

  • Have a ceremony that’s just the two of you, but throw a reception afterward for all your friends and family.
  • Hire a professional photographer to come with you to city hall, then send out great pictures of the event with your wedding announcement; or, contact Native Texas Wedding’s and we’ll do it for you.
  • Invite your parents and best friends to come with you – the small group can go out for a celebratory dinner afterward.
  • Elope now, but make plans to have a blowout ten-year anniversary party. You might even include a cheeky note with your wedding announcements saying something like,  “Our wedding day was just the two of us, but we hope you’ll come celebrate when we make it to ten years on June 26, 2014. “
  • If you do decide to elope, be sure to not act too quickly.  Consider carefully where you want to marry, and look into the marriage license laws.  Many places don’t allow you to apply for a license and marry on the same day.  This is also partially why eloping to Las Vegas is so popular, as fast marriages are considerably easier there.
  • You’ll also want to think about inviting a few guests.  Some couples invite only their best man and maid of honor, others invite their parents.  For a courthouse wedding, ask how many guests you are allowed to bring with you.  Of course you don’t have to invite anyone; typically court clerks can stand in as witnesses; or choose Native Texas Weddings as you venue.

Now, if you have chosen to elope, to jump over the broom to seal the marriage pact, think about eloping to the country setting of Native Texas Weddings.
